The Taiwan independence movement originated in the early 20th century when Taiwan was still a colony of Japan. After the end of World War II in 1945, Taiwan was placed under the control of China. However, the Taiwanese people were not satisfied with this "forced handover" and gradually formed the Taiwan independence movement.
The Taiwan independence movement advocates for Taiwan to declare independence from mainland China and become an independent sovereign state. They believe that Taiwan's culture and history are not the same as that of China and therefore should exist independently. In addition, the Taiwan independence movement also advocates for a free and democratic Taiwan.
The Taiwan independence movement shifted to non-violent means in the 1980s and gained more supporters. In 1996, Taiwan established a democratically elected leader, becoming one of the first countries in Asia to have such a political system. However, the People's Republic of China does not recognize Taiwan's democratically elected leader and still sees Taiwan as part of China.
The continuous development of Taiwan's independence movement and the turbulent situation in its political arena have attracted attention from the Asian region. In addition, with the change in the status and power of the United States and China in the Asian region, Taiwan has become a tricky problem in international politics.
Although the Taiwan independence movement has received a lot of support, they also face many challenges and difficulties. Taiwan and China share many similarities in culture and history, and their behavior on some international political issues is not unified and coordinated. However, the Taiwan independence movement continues to fight for the freedom, democracy, and independence of the Taiwanese people.
